Bundles, Up-Sells and Cross-Sells for Products Built From PLR
Once you have a few products built from PLR, you can start connecting them: bundling related items, suggesting an upgrade, or recommending a companion product at checkout. Done well, these offers help buyers find what they need. Done carelessly, they feel pushy or confusing. Here’s how to set them up thoughtfully.
Bundles: Group Products That Belong Together
A bundle works best when the items solve one problem together, such as a planner, a habit tracker and a short guide on using them. Before you build one, check that each PLR license allows the products to be combined and sold as a package. Then make the contents easy to scan: list every file, its format and what it’s for.
Up-Sells and Cross-Sells: Know the Difference
WooCommerce’s documentation describes three types of linked suggestions:
- Up-sells suggest an alternative to the product being viewed, usually a more complete or higher-priced version. They appear on the single product page, below the description (depending on your theme).
- Cross-sells suggest complementary items based on what’s in the cart and appear on the cart page.
- Related products are chosen automatically from shared categories or tags. You can influence them by organizing categories and tags carefully.
Up-sells and cross-sells are set manually in each product’s Linked Products tab. A simple example: a buyer viewing a 30-day email course might see an up-sell for the course plus a workbook, while someone with the course in their cart might see a cross-sell for a matching content calendar template.
Be Careful With “Free” Bonuses
Bonuses are a natural fit for digital products, but the FTC’s Guide Concerning Use of the Word “Free” (16 CFR Part 251) sets expectations. Among its points: buyers shouldn’t pay more than the regular price for the item they purchase to get the free one, terms should be stated clearly at the outset rather than tucked into a footnote, and calling something a “gift” or “bonus” doesn’t fix an otherwise misleading free offer. This is general information; check with a qualified professional for your specific offer.
Keep Offers Simple
- Limit each page to one or two suggestions so the main product stays clear.
- Make sure every suggested product adds something different.
- Explain exactly what’s included in each version.
- Review your linked products whenever you add or retire a product.
