PDF, PNG or JPG? Choosing File Formats for PLR Printables

When you rebrand a PLR planner, worksheet or wall art, the last step is exporting files your buyers can actually use. The wrong format can mean blurry prints, white edges after trimming, or files too large to upload. Here’s a quick way to decide.

Match the Format to the Job

Canva’s help center, as of October 2026, describes its main download options like this:

  • PDF Print: intended for printing, at 300 dpi, with options for bleed, crop marks and a color profile. This is usually the best choice for planners, worksheets and anything buyers will print at home or at a print shop.
  • PDF Standard: a lower-resolution PDF (96 dpi) suited to on-screen use, and the only Canva PDF type that supports password protection.
  • PNG: for graphics that need a transparent background, such as stickers or clip art elements.
  • JPG: for photographs, where a smaller file size matters.

For most printables, a PDF Print file is the main deliverable. A PNG or JPG version is a useful extra for buyers who want to use a page digitally or in another app.

Understand Bleed and Margins

If a design has color or images running to the edge of the page, it needs bleed. Canva explains that bleed is an extra area beyond the trim line so the background reaches the edge without a white border after cutting, and it adds 0.125 inches per side. Keep text inside the margins. You can turn on “Show print bleed” under File > Settings, then download as PDF Print with “Crop marks and bleed” ticked. Canva also notes that print providers may have their own requirements, so tell buyers to check with theirs.

Check Marketplace Limits

If you sell on Etsy, its help center (as of October 2026) allows up to five digital files per listing, with a maximum of 20MB per file. Supported types include PDF, PNG, JPG and ZIP, among others. File names can be up to 70 characters and use only letters, numbers, periods, underscores or hyphens – and Etsy says you can’t rename a file after uploading it, so name files carefully the first time.

If a bundle won’t fit in five files, combine pages into one PDF or group files into a ZIP, keeping each under the size limit.

A Simple Export Routine

  1. Export the main printable as PDF Print, with bleed if the design runs to the edges.
  2. Add PNG or JPG versions only if they help buyers.
  3. Print a test page at home to check margins and legibility.
  4. Name files clearly, for example weekly-planner-us-letter.pdf.
  5. Include a short “how to print” note with paper size and scaling tips.
