CAN-SPAM Basics for PLR Sellers Building an Email List
Email is one of the most useful channels for selling digital products, and PLR content packs make it easy to fill an autoresponder quickly. Before you start sending, make sure your emails follow the CAN-SPAM Act, the US law that sets rules for commercial email. The FTC’s compliance guide for business summarizes the requirements. This is general information; check your own situation with a qualified professional.
The Core Requirements
According to the FTC’s guide, commercial emails must:
- Use accurate header information. The “From,” “To” and “Reply-To” details must identify who is actually sending the message.
- Use honest subject lines that reflect what the email contains.
- Identify the message as an advertisement. The law allows flexibility in how you do this, but it must be clear.
- Include a valid physical postal address, such as a street address, a registered post office box or a registered private mailbox.
- Explain how to opt out of future marketing emails, in a way that is clear and easy to use.
- Honor opt-outs promptly. The FTC says your opt-out method must work for at least 30 days after you send, and you must process requests within 10 business days. You can’t charge a fee, ask for more than an email address, or make people jump through extra steps – and you can’t sell or transfer the address of someone who opted out (other than to a company helping you comply).
- Monitor what others do on your behalf. Hiring an email service or a partner to send for you doesn’t remove your responsibility.
The FTC notes that each separate email that violates the law can bring penalties of up to $53,088, so this is worth getting right.
What This Means for PLR Autoresponders
PLR email swipes are written for a generic sender, so check each one before it goes into your sequence:
- Rewrite subject lines that tease something the email doesn’t deliver.
- Remove any other seller’s name, links or affiliate offers.
- Make sure your email platform adds your postal address and unsubscribe link to every message, including old templates.
- Delete income or results claims you can’t back up; FTC advertising rules apply to email too.
